GW Resources

Local Resources

All GW students have access to the Washington Research Library Consortium database. The consortium has developed ALADIN, a powerful electronic search tool through which PsyD students can perform a single search of the holdings of all consortium libraries, including Gelman Library. ALADIN also provides students with access to a variety of other searchable electronic databases. For example, PsyD students will find PsycINFO, which contains references and abstracts from almost all psychologically oriented periodicals and journals, to be particularly useful. Enrolled PsyD students have 24-hour access to ALADIN from their home computers, and students may also use on-campus computing facilities to access ALADIN.

In addition to GW's extensive resources, Washington, D.C., offers access to major government collections that may be useful to Professional Psychology Program students: the U.S. National Library of Medicine and the Library of Congress.

Advising

Each student is assigned an advisor from the core faculty prior to registering for the first semester of studies. Advisors' office hours are posted on their individual faculty pages each semester. Students are encouraged to meet with their advisor on a regular basis, at least once a semester, particularly for help in selecting a major area paper (MAP) topic, preparing for the comprehensive examination, selecting an internship and considering career goals.

Please note that the advisor-advisee relationship is intended to offer discreet, reflective consideration of issues students face in their graduate education and training. The advisor uses discretion in what is shared with the wider faculty from advisor-advisee interactions, but the relationship is not confidential.

Each fall, advisors prepare a written annual review of their student’s academic, clinical and ethical progress in three areas (academic, clinical and ethical). Areas of concern are accompanied by recommendations for improvement and should be discussed in detail with the advisor.
