Psychiatric Referrals

The treating Staff at the Center Clinic has developed a strong, collaborative relationship with the GW Department of Behavioral Health and Medicine in order to provide affordable psychiatric (medication management) health services to our patients.

When we refer a patient for psychiatric evaluation through our partnership with GW Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, the following steps are taken:

  • The qualifications for referral require that: (1)  the patient is receiving therapy services in the Center Clinic; (2) the patient does not have insurance/cannot afford regular out-of pocket expenses and requires reduced fee; and (3) the patient need initial assessment for medication or assessment of and ongoing management of existing medications. The initial appointment cost is $80 and subsequent, required follow up sessions are $20. Please note that follow-up sessions for medication management are required when receiving care at the Center Clinic.
  • Your therapist will make the referral on your behalf, which may include providing a list of symptoms and the release of relevant records from the patient file. This requires that the patient authorize a Request and Release of Information form between The Center Clinic and GW Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.
  • Within approximately one week of making the referral, your therapist will provide you with the name and contact information of the assigned psychiatric resident and his or her contact information. The patient will then be provided with this information and he or she has 3 weeks (from the date assigned) to contact the psychiatrist and schedule a session.

In order to ensure quality of care, ongoing communication between the psychiatrist, therapist, and patient is required.
